Drive, say, a Chevy Silverado 1500? Do this for it about every 20,000 to 25,000 kilometers; you'll find the engine air filter in the air cleaner assembly under the hood, near the engine, and the cabin filter likely in a compartment behind the glove box.

Otherwise, do it when you see the signs of faulty air filters. They include dirty, damaged, or worn filter media, of course. You'll know a failed engine filter, though, from a Check Engine light on the dash, engine power loss, misfires, trouble speeding up, worsening gas kilometrage, and black smoke coming out of the exhaust.
