Changing Car Air Filters is Easy -- Here's a DIY
You're in the middle of a drive. The Check Engine light's come on the dash. If the engine has been misfiring or losing power lately, you've had trouble speeding up, and black smoke's been billowing out of the exhaust, something's up.
Luckily, it's probably not a fuel injector gone bad. It's likely not even an ignition coil failing. Usually, it just means you need to replace your air filters.
Even better, the job's pretty simple. Here's how to do it, in most cases, whether you drive a car like Chrysler 300, a truck like RAM 2500, or otherwise.
How to Replace an Engine Air Filter
- Pop your hood and find the top of the engine filter's housing (your manual can help with this); take the top off.
- Remove the old filter. Clean out the housing, making sure to get all the edges; a Shop-Vac works for this, but anything that gets rid of dirt and debris will, too.
- Put the new filter in, with its rubber rim facing up/out. Then, replace the top of the housing.
How to Replace a Cabin Air Filter
- Open your glove compartment, find the pin and screw that hold it up, remove them, and lower the compartment.
- The cabin filter cover should be right behind the compartment; pull it off.
- Take the old filter out; clean out the housing area, either by vacuuming it, wiping it out, or otherwise.
- Put the new filter in, replace the cover, raise the glove box back up, put the screw and pin back in, and close the compartment.
Be sure to check your owner's manual for your model's specifics. Not sure quite how to do any of this? As with any service, get in touch with a service center; a tech will be happy to help out.
