What are Some Common BMW Problems?

Your BMW is the "Ultimate Driving Machine" -- eminently luxurious, technologically sophisticated, and above all, a proven performer. Unfortunately, the brand's vehicles aren't entirely without issue. Luckily, yours should last you decades, hundreds of thousands of kilometers -- you'll just have to keep up with regular maintenance.
It's a good thing you came to us here at OEM Pro Parts about that. Here's a few issues you might run into with some popular BMW models, plus what to do about them.

BMW 325i

If your 325i is leaking oil under itself, and it smells like something's burning in the engine compartment, then most likely, it's got a defective valve cover gasket. These can go bad after 97,000 km or so, though it's commonest in models from between 1990 and 2006 with 420,000 km or fewer on their odometers. Yours will need replacement.

On the other hand, if the speed of the heater fan in your 325i varies no matter the setting; if it won't turn off when you turn the car off; or if it won't turn on at all, then most likely, the problem's a failed blower final stage fan resistor. This is a known issue for models from between 1992 and 2006 with 400,000 km or so on their odometers. The resistor will have to be replaced.

BMW X5

If the low coolant light is on in your X5, and the engine's overheating, then most likely, the water pump is leaking. This is a known issue for models from between 2000 and 2008 with around 400,000 km on their odometers. The pump will have to be replaced.

Otherwise, the cause could be a leaking expansion tank. This is also a known issue for models from between 2000 and 2008, also with 400,000 km or so on their odometers. The tank will need replacement.

BMW 530i

If the steering wheel in your 530i shudders when you go over bumps, and the suspension feels far too soft, then most likely, the front thrust rod/tension strut bushings have failed. This is a known issue for models from between 1994 and 2007 with 260,000 km or so on their odometers. The bushings will have to be replaced.

Otherwise, if there's a leak in the car's power steering, it's probably from a bad power steering hose. This is also a known issue for models from between '94 and '07, but with a little under 400,000 km or so on their odometers. The hose will require replacement.
