Oil Filters 101

Here are ways you can keep your oil filter in good condition:

Make sure you replace the oil filter during an oil change. An old clogged filter will cause a restriction of the flow of oil, which could end up damaging the engine. Follow your manufacturer's advice on the time interval for replacements.

The other thing is, when you replace your filter, make sure it's OEM. Aftermarket filters can compromise the level of protection and put your engine at risk.

Make sure to lubricate the rubber gasket of a new filter with oil by using a little fresh oil rubbed onto the gasket before screwing it on. This way, there will be good sealing, and when changing the oil next time, it will come off easily.

Lastly, when you take it out, check the old filter for metal shavings or debris; if you see any, it means there is wear in your engine or some other problem that must be taken care of. Attend to those issues immediately to prevent greater damage to your engine.
