All About OEM Grilles

The Kinds of Grilles Your Vehicle Can Have

A cowl screen, wheel grilles, a rear decklid grille, and most commonly, a front grille.

  • Cowl screens, you'll find on the hoods of a lot of cars, trucks, and SUVs; they cover gaps between windshields and hoods, and can help ventilate interiors.
  • A wheel grille, of you've got one, you can find below the front bumper; it can help dissipate heat from friction between brake rotors and brake pads.
  • Rear decklid grilles help safeguard and ventilate engines in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicles (e.g., Ford Mustang).
  • Front grilles (also called front bumper grilles or lower grilles) allow air to flow freely, circulate around, and cool off radiators, helping protect them, and engines, in the process.

Example DIY: How to Upgrade a Front Grille

Grab a pair of work gloves and some safety goggles, plus either a socket set or some spanner wrenches. Then, pop your hood, find the grille cover, remove it, and use a spanner to take all the nuts off all the bolts and set them aside. (If you need help loosening stuck-on bolts, you can spray them with a lubricant.)

Now, work the grille loose, take it off, and slide in the new grille. (Put it in the same way the old one was mounted.) Then, replace the grille bolts and take your vehicle for a test-drive, listening for rattling or knocking. If you hear any, check to make sure the grille is seated and bolted in correctly. Fix whatever you need to.

Check your owner's manual for more model-specific directions. Need help with installation? Feel free to get in touch with a dealership. (In the case of a Mustang, that'd be a Ford service centre.)
